A legal mechanism for acquiring a right or being released from an obligation over time, as defined by law. There are two types: acquisitive prescription or usucaption, which is a way of acquiring property and other real rights through continuous possession over a specified period; and extinctive or liberatory prescription, which involves the expiration of a right or action of patrimonial content due to the inactivity of the creditor and the passage of time.
